About using a shock collar on dogs?

I have a little dog who loves to bark and a friend gave me a shock collar to use. I have a teen boy who walks the dog for me and he said it is illegal to use a shock collar in the state of Arizona. I am wondering if this is true or not.

The collar is used for two weeks and then the dog will stop barking. The collar worked for my friend and now her dog never barks.

What do you know about this???

Shock collars do work, however there is a muuuch more humane form of decreasing barking. (only in very rare cases are shock collars the only way). Prepare a positive punishment (adding a negative effect) you can do this by throwing coins into and empty coke can and taping shut. Have you dog get excited and bark, as soon as he does rattle the can and startle him, he will temporarily stop the barking immidiately reward, as soooon as the noise stops. Even if you know he is not through barking reward him for the slightest pause in noise. Begin introducing a word such as "enough" or "stop". Continue this until he relates hushing with being rewarded. It will take anywhere from one trial to a few weeks to master but he’ll catch on.

shock collars are cruel to dogs
do not use it, use a clicker thing
and teach it, everytime it does not bark in command feed it some treats
and do other tricks to keep it occupy and happy with you

What if we put this color on you, would you like it? Well, YOU might actually like it, but it doesn’t mean you need to hurt the dog. There are better ways to train a dog.

Shock Collars are not cruel when you use then the right and proper way. If you use it right the collar will reduce if not completely train your dog not to bark.

Don’t listen to the soft bunnyhuggers.

I will get TD for this, but I am against shock collars, they are totally unnecessary. With enough consistency & training you CAN get your dog to shut-up, without having to use such a measure.

I am not saying they are cruel when used properly, I am saying they are unnecessary, there is a difference there people….use your head.

a better altenative is a citronella collar. it works with the same idea of the shock collar but instead of shocking the dog it sprays out an awful spray in the dogs face and makes them stop barking.

I honestly don’t know about the collar but I totally respect you for your diligence in trying to correct the problem. I have a mini terrier that lives next door to me and she barks EVERY minute she is outside – especially if I am out even standing still on the deck. I wish you the best of luck.

aww please dont…it might work…but its soo mean and he or she doesnt deserve it …would you like it if you got shocked everytime you talked?…no i dont think so…so please dont…and if you do you are heartless…if you truly love the dog you wont mind his or her barking…and if you dont love him or her…including all his or her flaws give her to someone who will appreciate him or her…

They work fine, you just have to use them properly and not abuse it. If you get one read up on info so you have a firm understanding of what your doing. And they dont shock that hard, I even put it on and let my wife shock me. Yeah, I know it sounds dumb, but she was worried and it was the only way I could convince her it wasnt that bad of a shock. I cleaned the house spotless that day btw..

They don’t work. My neighbor had one on her Jack Russell at the advice of her "trainer" for an entire year and the thing never so much as decreased her barking. Her barking actually increased because the shock would scare her, causing her to bark more. She became more of a neurotic freak, overall, though. Scared of EVERYTHING. She bites now.

Shock collars work in the short term but in the long run they can cause severe behavioral problems:

Shock collars are not cruel when used properly…and are NOT illegal in Arizona.
