Personally, I’ve found them to be ineffective on a long term basis and I have concerns over the long term effects of citronella being inhaled or shot into the eyes.
A lot of dogs figure out that the collar empties in about 25 barks… and a lot of dogs simply decide that the barking is worth the hassle of the citronella.
If it works for you, wonderful… use the tool that works for you.

Yes, much safer than a shock collar and equally productive. I myself don’t like to use them but I would rather someone use a citronella collar than a shock or pinch collar anyday.

It is safe. Citronella is a unique scent that most dogs don’t normally encounter. It’s non-offensive to humans, yet "unusual" enough to distract your dog from whatever he’s barking at. However, it only distracts your dog from barking when he does. It doesn’t always stop the barking, it’s used only as a training method to teach the dog what not to do, when he stops barking you should praise him to show him it’s good not to.

While they will work initially, the dog will soon get accustomed to it, know when the collar is on or off, and will figure out ways around it. Also, the long term affects of these collars have not been tested.
Instead of dealing with the collar, train to deal with the barking. Basic obedience classes will help get the dog out around other dogs and people, which typically will get the dog barking. The instructors can work with you to teach the dog to not bark when you don’t want them to.
