are there any benefits of using a shock collar versus just telling the dog "no"?
my uncle uses a shock collar for his pointer and th dog is always really scared when he puts it on him and follows his every command exactly. it looks like it really hurts the dog.

Yes it is a form of abuse. If the owner is that big of a control freak, they shouldn’t have a dog. I have seen humans demo the collar and they say it is very painful. Poor dogs!!

I would recommend a shock collar. Dogs do not understand the word NO. Negative reinforcement is required to adequately teach a canine.

i dont like those collars, there are other ways to train a dog. If you cant do it, its so mush better to take her to a trainer. I believe those collars really hurt them, they would bother me if I had them on. Then when you take it off the dog wont listen, your better off going to a trainer or training her yourself.

I guess the shock collar is easier if you value your own convenience over the comfort&happiness of your dog.

Yes, it REALLY hurts. I speak from experience. ( my brother has put one on me before)
Shaking a pop can filled with rocks to get the dogs attention, then telling him ‘no’ may work better. That and a distinct difference in your command and reward voices you use with the dog. When you say no, you need to let the dog know that you mean NO.

You’re right – the dog is being hurt. And intimidated. Shocking a dog doesn’t make the dog learn a thing. I’m sorry you have to witness this – it’s so much better to teach a dog using reward-based training than these bullying, forceful techniques.

The reason he does this is because bird dogs are not supposed to bark when hunting. I can see why he does this. Think of it this way also: When two dogs bark at each other they just keep barking. When you scream NO to a dog it could think you are encouraging it. I would say it is all right to use a shock collar on a bird dog.

shock collars are a nice tool if they are not overused. They wont hurt the dog either, but some dogs seem to become callused to them. I had a little heeler jack russel mix, and he didnt seemed fazed by it. But I think its wrong to overuse it. When it comes to barking too much, just bring the dog inside more often.

There is a german lady studying the physiological effects of shock collars on dogs. She’s finding that as long as a year later, when the dog returns to a place where it experienced the joy of a shock collar, the dogs stress level still spikes.
She’s discovered a lot more, based on her findings shock collars are no longer available over the counter to the average pet owner.

Shock collars are inhumane – if you want touse oneI reccomend attaching one to upt thigh & shocking yourself to see how it feels…
Truthfully I know someone who did this – he had trouble using his leg for over 4 hours after…
Seriously the dog has NO clue what its getting shocked for – itsl like making toddlers run around in open feilds with large metal rods attached to their heads during lightening storms — when they get zapped by lightening – they have NOOO clue what happened – train your dog with out negative enforcement – & no shock collars !!!
it will just be wasted money &will hurt your dog

The collars don’t hurt the dog, and they are more effective than just NO, No with a buzz is most effective. The collars only have watch batteries in them and they make you jump because it has the feel of a big jolt but isn’t.

YOUR UNCLE MAY have miss-used the collar.
I don’t mean in a cruel way….
The shock collar is not supposed to be very pain full but the dog may be more frightened because it seems he is always being scolded and shocked when the collar is put on.
They should be put on and the dog allowed to become familiar with it, left on as much as possible.
If the collar is put on a dog and you start training him he is afraid of doing wrong instead of eager to earn your praise. Also the dog may start to not listen at all without the collar.
Personally I would prefer a dog that was loyal and eager to please.

I’m not sure I’m talking the same device, but we have a 2 yr old Pomeranian and use a wireless containment system for him. We were eager to try this as we have a 14 yr old Pom that is a paraplegic from being hit by a car. The first time we used it he cried and went back to the back stoop. The next day we played with him , tossing his toys and he now works with the system at three different houses. The devices are adjustable and his just feels like the static electricity you get in the winter off a carpet. I wonder if his collar is properly adjusted?

It can be a good way of training, if not abused. My boyfriend has a dog that pulls food off the table, and if you try to pull her away, she bites HARD. She also has a tendency to bit your hand if you’re holding pizza, this sort of behavoir could honestly be fixed with a shock collar. They’re also very useful for training hunting dogs. However, i do think it’s cruel when people buy a shock collar just because they don’t like their dog talking.

I am a dog-lover. I WOULD STRICTLY GO AGAINST THE shock collar. Can people out there stop hurting poor dogs all over the world. Just imagine wad would happen if there is shock collar for babies because they dun understand us. ISnt this utter cruelty.
You can always train your dog! Send ur dog for training sessions. It will then react to the no. Please please dun ever use such a creul method of the shock collar. Dogs also have feelings and life. Dont be a sinner!
