Can animal control really MAKE your dog get a shock collar?

My neighbors keep complaining about my Shih Tzu barking.
Now, they’ve said we’re required to make him wear a shock collar. I don’t like the idea of that at all, I think it’s cruel and I refuse to do that to my dog.
They shouldn’t be able to *make* me do anything to my puppy.
Is there any way out of this?
Thanks in advance. :]

The neighbors say that? Or AC? either way, they can’t do it. They can only threaten a ticket which might make your parents consider a bark collar.

They really aren’t that mean. They feel like a rubber band snap.

Why don’t you keep your dog in the house where it belongs? If it’s being a nuisance, hire a behaviorist or trainer to help you instead of acting all offended. Just because the dog is small or is a "puppy" doesn’t mean it’s any less annoying to the rest of us.

there is a way out of it, train your dog not to bark won’t need a collar than

honestly, if i had a neighbor whose yappy dog barked at all hours of the night and day and i had a kid, i would put a bark collar on all. Be considered! if your dog is being a nuisance you need to train it

They cannot make you make your dog wear a shock collar. It is YOUR dog and you can do whatever [nicely of course] you want to do with YOUR dog [except hurt it] Your neighboors can wear earplugs all day if they want but you tell them your not going to put a shock collar on your dog.

Well…thats kinda iffy, if they have been complaining for a long time then yea..the control officer is probaly tired of getting the calls and wants you to do it..but the collar is fine…i had to do it for my min pin and in about a days time..he quit barking..so he knows its ok to bark w out the collar but if its on..he knows better

Did your neighbors say your dog is required to wear a shock collar, or did animal control say your dog is required to wear a shock collar?
I think it’s pretty bogus either way. I would just work on controlling the barking with some basic training to see if that helps shut your neighbors up-maybe they’re the one’s who need the shock collar =]

Are you leaving your dog outside all the time? If the dog is a nuisance with non stop barking animal control can make you use a shock collar. It happened to someone who gave their dog up to me for adoption.

If the ACO insists that you have to use one and you don’t you can be fined or the dog can be taken from you.

Well, has animal control actually come to you with documented proof that there is a law saying your dog MUST wear a shock collar? If not, then I wouldn’t put it on the dog. I do not believe in using them.

Unless there is actually a law in effect that requires them or there is an ordinence in your community that says you have to put a shock collar on your dog if it barks, then they can’t MAKE you do anything.

Although, if your dog barks enough to have the neighbors complaining…you may want to find a way to keep your dog quiet.

I don’t think they can MAKE your dog wear a shock collar – (although I think they are referring to a bark breaker collar) however if your dog is a nuisance barker – they CAN make you get rid of your dog…if it doesn’t stop and you get numerous violations against you!

It is your responsibility to be a good neighbor, and to train your dog not to bark – by whatever means you can…contact a professional trainer if you must…there are numerouse methods to get to BEFORE going to the collar if you don’t like the idea of it!

    Good Luck!

I dont think they could MAKE you do anythig. Its your dog. If you want to try and control the barking get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Every time he barks go out and squirt im with water. Or instead of water you could use the in between bath sprays that make them smell really good…then you get 2 things done at once! Don’t forget to praise him when hes good! Good luck!

First of all did your neighbors say this or did Animal control come out and tell you this? Do you keep this dog inside? After all its a small dog and shouldn’t be kept outdoors. There are other options to control barking. You can get one of those collars that make the high pitched sound everytime the dog barks and for the most part its effective (I will warn we did that for our poodle since we live in an apartment and we were gone maybe 3 hours and when we got home he had torn off the beeper and destroyed it) You could get a machine that does the same thing within a certain radius and it might work (it worked for some boxers I knew) or you could get that collar where everytime the dog barks it sprays them with something but I think that one is cruel. We were told in small dogs a shock collar could kill it especially in young or senior small dogs, its risky. If animal control didn’t come out and tell you to do it and just your neighbors said it I would look into these other options. I hate to suggest this but with the danger of shock collars and all if it gets to that point do you have any relatives without any close by neighbors that could take the dog (last resort ofcourse I don’t like the idea of rehoming a dog) Try the sonic collar or machine first

i don’t know the laws where you are,but i have 13 dogs and they bark sometimes, and i had to move to the country so that they would get off my case!
but there is an alternative method to make your dog stop barking,it’s a collar that squirts a citric substance in the face of your dog whenever it barks,it is harmless to the dog,and it does make them stop barking!
a friend of mine had to use the shock collar cause she lives in an apartment building, and the other tenants were complaining all the time, whenever it barked,it got a small enough shock to make it yelp, but it did work, and she only had to use it for a couple of weeks, and only when she wasn’t home.
of course,a dog trainer could teach it to stop barking, but it is costly..
since,i refused to use either method,i just moved!
i hope you find a solution, sweetie!sorry,to hear you are having trouble with your idiot neighbors!
