Does An Invisible Fence or Hand Held Shock Collar Work Better For Containing Your Dog?

I want my dog to stay in my yard, he keeps roaming all over the neighborhood. I would like information on whether an invisible fence shock collar system, or a hand held shock collar would work the best. Can anyone also tell me what brand and what it costs?
Thanks for any info.

I use a shock collar with my dog when I take him hiking. The strength of the shock is adjustable and I test it on myself before putting it on the dog. The setting I use is a little more than a tickle and is intended to break his concentration when he’s fixated on something. As soon as I grab the collar, he gets very excited – and if he hated it (like he does his gentle lead) then he wouldn’t sit as I put it on him.

I also use an anti-barking collar when he goes in the backyard. Again, if he hated it, then he wouldn’t sit calmly as I was putting it on.

As far as how effective they are, I think it depends on the dog. My dog is extremely bright – too bright, so he picked up on what was going on very quickly. However, even with the shock collar, if he sees a squirrel, he’s hellbent on catching it and the collar won’t stop him.

neither work for containing ur dog. how would u like it if we shocked u when u made a mistake. besides u have to CONSTANTLY check the batteries. and if u have a dog such as a border collie or lab instincts will take over. and ur dog will get out. nothing is a substitiute for a good chainlink or wooden privacy fence.

It did NOT work for my dog. After we installed it she tried jumping the fence. She stopped for about 10 hours, then figured out that it only shocked when she was right next to the fence. She would run, jump over, and run away. Dogs are SMART!

It depends on how its used and properly, but to be honest, I border trained my Shepard, using a string around the yard.

Neither invisible fencing or shock collars work for containing dogs.
If you have ever held a shock collar and tried it, it doesn’t feel good, imagine how your dog would feel with it around their neck.
    2. It doesn’t keep other pets/animals/people out of your yard.
    3. Sometimes if a dog runs after a squirrel etc he may be so excited and not notice the shock as he runs past the boundaries. After he calms down and if he finds his way back home he won’t come back into the yard for the shocking.
    4. When the power goes out, your "fencing" goes out.
    5. The battery in the collar could wear down and you not know it, put the dog out and off he goes.
My personal opinion is there are more cons the pros to invisible fencing. I would invest in proper fencing for the dog.

So guys, what if this person lives where your not allowed to have chain link or privacy fencing on your property?

    What do you suggest then?

I am not a fan of underground fencing, but I also have two heavy coated breeds with a mind of their own (Husky and Malamute). For these two breeds, I doubt it would work well, but I have the luxury of being able to have a privacy fence.

If it’s your only choice, I say give it a try.
