My dog barks a lot and i was just wondering which collar would work better the Citronella anti-barking collar or the shock collar.

i have used the citronella collar on my jack russell and it stopped her barking within a week … it is not cruel … it is annoying to the dog to have the citronella smell, but it is way more annoying to have a dog who barks excessively and face possible eviction … where i live some pet stores rent them because they are that effective … it was 20 dollars for one week and 50 dollar deposit and if you needed it for more than a week you just kept it and they kept your 50 dollar deposit … but you can buy them for around 60 dollars anywhere … my dog would start to bark and not stop when we moved to a new apartment building where the mail came through the front door … the dog would not bark when i was there but when i was at work as soon as the first dog in the building barked she would start, the other dogs would stop but she would continue … i could not sit in the stairwell every day until the postal person came, i had a job to go to … the collar worked very well and i would suggest it … a shock collar is a bit extreme for barking as the citronella collar will usually do the trick :O)

neither…that stuff really messes with a dogs mind, sometimes making them more agressive

I don’t agree with those things. How would you like having a shock collar on your neck?

Don’t use them. I truthfuly think those aren’t very humane. When you see those AFV videos of humans using them they freak out at the pain, imagine it on some smaller creature. I think you should use bitter apple spray or they have special uh, machines? (its not big, about the size of a walkie talkie) and they produce a sound that quiet them down.

PLEASE NO SHOCK COLLAR, ITS MEAN. if you just take a few minutes out of your life and train him with treats he’ll learn when to bark and when not to. a shock collar is cruelty no matter what people say. i love dogs and it doesn’t bother me if they bark. you dont have to believe me put one on and try it yourself. i don’t think you would like it if someone put a collar on you to stop you from talking. dogs dont understand when to bark and when not to bark, they must be taught.

How about training your dog not to bark so much? Just a thought.

Help from a trainer. That’s what works best.

    Shock collar isn’t humane.
Citronella collars are ineffective on a lot of dogs and aren’t teaching your dog anything.

  8. racecarsnotdogs Says:

Neither! Train your dog to bark on command ‘humanely by treating when he ‘speaks’, find out why he is barking – what triggers it and remove the trigger.

Dogs can bark because they are bored – how much exercise does he get both mentally and physically?

You need to put some effort into training a dog not just go for a cruel quick fix method, if you cant put the effort in give the dog to someone who will

well bark collars of any kind are last resort. bring a trainer to your house, you can try just simple punishments for barking like harsh tones. never tell her shhh.. its okay. because that encouraging it. you can try the collars that make a noise that they hate (i didn’t have much success with them tho) or the citronella (dont use it if you own a shih tzu or any other dogs with sensitive noses..these dont work well either from what ive heard). i wouldn’t use a shock collar because they can make your dog very aggressive, even toward his owners and are VERY cruel. dogs bark naturally to warn and protect so maybe he needs to learn who/whats dangerous and whats not. hopes this helps : ) best of luck.
