How to stop my dog from barking?

It’s primarily 2 different times—people at the door and the neighbors’ dogs. I’ve tried citronella collar, sound collar, shock collar, holding her to calm her down, putting her outside when someone comes and she won’t stop barking. Most of these are people she sees often too. The only 3 she doesn’t bark at are me, my son and my husband and I think it’s because she hears our vehicles pull up first and knows.

Get this…I have the book "the Dog Whisperer" and the only thing I found in it is less than a page for problem barking.

Please, only suggestions that you know have worked. Thanks!

Heh, no surprise the Dog Whisperer was of no use.lol. (Sorry not a fan) This problem is actually going to take more time and won’t get resolved with harsh negative reinforcement methods (e.g. All the collar mentioned).

Try teaching her the Speak command and using that, teach the quiet command. To do this do something that triggers the barking (e.g. Someone at the door). Say ‘speak’ and if she continues barking, reward her. Try this over and over until she is able to do this simply by command (without the person at the door). Next, as she is barking say "quiet!" and if she stops barking reward her and repeat.

If she continues barking and you can get her to quiet down with the use of your voice you have to divert her attention. Using a rattler (coins in a tin can, or pots, anything can creates loud startling noise), startle her and gently say quiet. What this does is not only does it create a negative association with the barking but it also (for a couple seconds) diverts her attention to you and allows you to give the command and reward.

Uhm, it is a really hard problem I see ^^

Maybe when she barks you can try being strict, just to show her who’s the boss.

You must use firm verbal commands, CONSISTENCY is always best! Good luck!

Im am assuming your dog knows what no means… Make sure u tell her no if she doesnt listen give her a gentle (gentle!) smack on the butt or tap he nose and keep at it until she gives in. Remmeber the nose is extremely sensative and dont get frustrated i know it is but it will work in time you jusr gatta do it over and over and over again. The neighbors dogs thing im not so sure about. I encourage my dog to bark when people come to the house cause im a stay at home mom and i like the pre warning someone is coming.

The fact that your dog is barking is a good thing because she is only notifiying you that there is someone close to your door. To train the dog not to bark, get a cheap water gun and every she barks when you don’t want her to, squirt her on the nose. Consistency is the best thing. If you do happen to rain her out of barking, don’t expect her to bark when something is really wrong…

the best thing to do is to let her bark decause once you get her to stop and when some one breaks in she wont scare them off but if some one trys to get in the bark alarm willl kick in!!

Train her to bark, and give her something else to do. Sounds crazy, I know.
Your dog thinks she’s being helpful. She’s telling you that the neighbours dogs are there and that there are visitors- that’s what barking is for, to tell you that there’s something happening. Shock collars etc mean that there really is something interesting happening, you’re interested in it too, and it’s really scary for her and so she should alert to warn you.

If you teach her to bark it becomes like any other ‘trick’- your dog will think that she’s barking to get the treat or to be told she’s good. Once she gets the treat she’ll stop barking. This only works for some dogs. Otherwise wait until she’s about to stop barking and then tell her (calmly) ‘quiet’ or something, and reward her when she stops barking.

If that doesn’t work, give her something else to do. Tell her, whenever scary visitors come, to fetch, sit in a particular spot, find you or whatever. Find someone she dislikes, and get them to participate so that if they come in and she does whatever she’s told instead of barking, they go away again (defeated) and you give her lots of praise. Do this every single time someone comes to the door, and if she does this thing make a big fuss of her and be really relaxed and happy.

What kind of dog is she? Some kinds are more prone to barking than others.
If she really won’t stop take heart- burglars are much more afraid of a dog that barks incessantly than of a big, scary-looking quiet dog.

I have been having a problem with my neighbors lately and it seems like they are letting their dogs bark on purpose. I thought that there was nothing that I could do since they were not my dogs but apparently I was wrong.

There were a few products that I tried but none seemed to work until I bought The Barking Dog CD. It really works and it is so easy to use. To say that I was impressed is an understatement.

You can check it out for yourself at http://www.thebarkingdogcd.com if you want to try it.
