I am furious. The question of shock collars came up in the dog category. I thought?

a question had to stay on the board for a certain period of time? Anyway, the asker’s choice was someone that said, "the shock the dog gets is like the shock you get from static on the carpet." Someone go shock that person…….Do you believe that? Please go read it and answer my question: Would you use a shock collar on your dog?
Metzer! What is your description of an "extremely stubborn problem" dog? How is the every day dog owner aware of a "good shock" collar and bad one? Not all people have a trained pro to point them in the right direction. People without funds will go to Wal Mart & not have a clue what they are purchasing or how much harm it can do to their dog.

I would not use a choker or prong collar on my dog.

My opinion is & always will be, pain never accomplishes anything. You compare the pain from a shock collar as static electricity. That is your opinion, not the amimals. Pain has never solved anything.

Use some consistancy and love. You don’t want your dog to cower and stick his tail between his legs out of fear.

I really doubt that "thousands and thousands" of shock collars are used.

I spoke to my vet. He said he would never recommend shock collars or any of the chokers. Again, why inflict pain? How about if your mom shocked you every time you peed your pants when you were a child

    martina,

Like it or not, this is a place folks come to ask questions and get answers…some we may find offensive and lacking in taste, and some like you mentioned, is cruel and definitely not the proper way to care for our furry friends.

Like you, if anyone were to come to my home and expose my cats to electrical shock, no matter how ‘mild,’ they would not make it out of the door alive. When we see this sort of treatment being suggested as a way to discipline or train animals, we as a community have a right to voice our displeasure. Hopefully the one asking for suggestions will see that it is not the best way and will steer clear of using such cruel tactics.

It’s the best we can do. To otherwise silence those who would suggest and use those methods would be censorship, and I don’t believe in using censorship. It’s just as wrong as ‘shocking’ animals.

    shock collors are mean ]
who would do that to an animal

  3. doggy mom Says:

Never ever. I love my dogs as if they were my children. They are taught how to act with love and patience. Anything they can’t learn that way will be something they just won’t learn.

there is only one reason why somone should use a shock collar..that is if the dog has bitten someone before meaning the dog is viscious. And no my dog is dead so i cant use a shock collar on his ashes

  6. mhairimacd Says:

i would never use one on my dog, they are cruel and inhumane way of trying to control your pet. They should be banned

  7. wolfribbon Says:

NEVER!!!!! That is cruel beyond belief! I have rescue animals that were abused. I would NEVER do that to them! They’ve been through enough without me adding to it.

I’ve used shock collars on my two dogs to help with their chewing issues, and they work great. And, yes, I HAVE actually shocked myself with it, at the same setting I used for them. I used it on myself first (and I consulted my vet first too, he said it doesn’t harm the dog), I would never use something like that without testing it. The shock isn’t enough to cause the dog pain, it’s just strong enough to surprise them and give them an uncomfortable sensation, which they associate with the action they were performing (i.e., peeing on the carpet, chewing on your new shoes, etc.). I have consulted many vets on this issue, they all said the same thing: it is not harmful to the dog when used properly, as I did. Maybe you should do some actual research on the issue before you criticise. Obviously you haven’t shocked yourself with one either, so how can you say how it feels?

I am a person that doesn’t like to say someones wrong. I enjoy hearing other peoples opinion and to express my own.
However in my honest opinion I believe shock collar, static pads and any other extreme negative corrections are wrong.

I mean especially something you’d consider your family pet. I’d rather fry myself than use that on an animal unable to realize why it’s being hurt.

So why is it that they are being shocked? because we don’t agree with their barking, marking, chewing, garbage digging? These are all natural behaviours for our fur kids and can easily be corrected with positve reinforcement or at the most extreme, a paper and a firm no.

Most guard dog services, police animals, drug sniffers and search and rescue services don’t use any kind of shockers So why may I ask are we are using this with our family pets?

    I’m sorry I don’t agree.

I said it,and I stand by it.Shocks from a shock collar are likened to those from static electricity, not those associated with stun guns or tasers. Many trainers use them, and many vets are ok with them also.I also said they have their place, should not be missused, and if you decide one is right for you, that you should learn the proper use from a professional trainer.
I also said, that used correctly they can be great assets for extremely stuborn problem dogs. They are not a quick fix that should be used in place of propper training.
I also pointed out not to buy cheap brands if you do decide on one,as cheap brands have been known to malfunction.
Be furious all you want, but they are an accepted practice by many.
I decided against a shock because I have never had a problem dog that couldnt be corrected by praise and positave reinforcment. If it’s a stubborn dog with what could be a harmful behaviour,I would much rather use the shock as a last resort than send a dog to the pound like many people do.
The answer chosen by the asker said nothing about what the shock was like,so try to keep your story straight next time.I think your just mad because the asker chose a person that agrees with their use, even though you dont.
I agree they should not be used for simple training or to punish a dog,but I still think in certain situations and used properly, they can be an asset.
I advocated proper usage,if used at all,not one for every puppy in the world.
I would also rather see a shock as oppsed to a choke chain in the hands of an inexpierianced user,Choke chains used improperly can cause severe throat damage and in some cases death, thats way worse then teporary discomfort.

The fact is folks, thousands upon thousands are used. You will never see them banned, and if someone has decided to use them, all the complaining in the world about them being wrong, will not stop them.Better to educate people on the proper and responsible use,by a proffesional trainer,Than to have thousands of Joe Somebodys buying cheap ones from Wal Mart and missusing them.

That is exactly the point of the post. How many people are you going to talk out of using them, unless you start posting some links they can explore?I dont like them and I would never use them is not going to change someones mind that wants to buy one.The entire point is education on the issue. They dont know a good one from a bad one,so they will run to wally world, but a cheap one,and use it with no idea of the proper way.Thats why anyone that wants to know will allways get the answer from me,that they need a proffesionals advice.A trainer,a vet,a breeder, someone that has a chance of talking them out of using them,or if they insist at least instruct them in the propper use and sittuation they should be used. You doubt thousands and thousands are in use? They are a big buisness, very big, take a look at all the choices, look at how many petco and other chain pet stores stock. They stock them for one reason only, because they make money.I am in no way a fan of shock collars,so your barking up the wrong tree. The sad fact is though many are,and nothing you or I say will change their mind.So as long as stores sell them I will continue to tell people to research proper brands, and to talk to a proffesanial if they insist on using them.

You answered part of your own question,by saying you talked to your vet and he would never use them, thats exactly what i’m getting at.You now know a proffesional in your area that has an opinnion on why they are bad.So now if someone you know ever mentions buying one,you can tell them you think they should talk to the vet about it.See what i’m saying here, you accepted your vets opinion over mine, much the same as others would take a vets opinion over yours.

This is getting way long, but I would be glad to give you an example of several dogs that were saved from going to the pound by shock collars, that were recomended by a trainer in our area as a last resort.I would be glad to discuss this further in e-mail with you,as I am not trying to stir the pot here.Just saying education is needed before chosing if you really want one or not.

  11. Compme Says:

Emphatically No – I would never use this and am as shocked as you. People "believe" orthink that to use adversion traning on dogs is a good thing. It has been proven in many articles written by outstanding vets that this will cause even even more aggressive behavior or that the dog will just shut down permanently. I’m with you on that opinion – let’s go find a big enough shock collar and use it on the person who thinks this is a ‘good idea or proper training method ‘, then maybe we’ll just see if afterward they Still think it’s so grand –
Kudos for your speaking out !

I am totally with metzger52365. First of all, you should really get your story straight. I’m the one who posted the asker’s choice. And like metzger52365 said, i think you’re just mad that we disagree with you. And you go sonnysgrrl! You should definitely research up on a topic (maybe speak to your vet if you want a professional?!?) BEFORE you criticize a topic….generally a good rule to live by.
