Shock Collar questions: DOGS?

im considering buying a shock collar for my dog
she is a weimaraner (large breed)

I want to get one so i can play with her in the large open field near my house thats next to the park without a leash.

Im considering getting one because if she sees people especially little kids she will want to go play with them, she jumps alot so she can knock over little kids… its not an aggression issue

i want to get this so she can have more freedom and so i can enjoy my dog more
…….
and im wondering on which shock collar i should get.. so could someone send me a link to a collar they know and have used that has worked for them…

something with a good range
for large dogs
something cheap not those 200+ collars

i was thinking of
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751307&lmdn=Training+%26amp%3B+Behavior#prodTab1 even though its somewhat expensive

and

P.S to those ppl who say its bad and cruel to get shock collars… im not gonna abuse it i hope to use it as little as possible so she knows she cant go chase after little kids and knock them over…
and dont say go to training classes. i dont have the time and money to do that…. a little shock wont hurt the dog that much…. people who say its barbaric are absurd….
a shock collar is just to redirect the dogs attention, im not using it just to cause pain

1 – if you’re going to buy a cheap one, you might as well just go flush that money down the toilet. A $200 Dogtra collar is the minimum I would recommend. I have bought the others, I now have about $500 worth of garbage sitting in a drawer b/c none of them work.

2 – if you buy one, and just start using it, you not only run the risk of never seeing your dog again… you also run the risk of completely ruining your dog. Educate yourself on using one before you ever put it on your dog. If you don’t… again, just flush the money down the toilet.

3 – If you do it right, there is no better tool available. My dogs wear their collars every time they leave the house. People ask me why I put them on them, since clearly they don’t need them because they listen so well. The collar are THE REASON they listen so well. Both of my collars are Dogtra. Both cost me $200 and both have been working flawlessly for years. (which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for my petsafe and innotec collars)

Add: I must disagree with Single Worker. Innotec will NOT stand behind their product. I have two collars to prove it. All Innotec was willing to do was give me a 10% discount on another collar when they stopped working. I will not recommend their garbage.

you need to take her to obedience classes not a shock collar. training will solve your problem.

  3. Gylean Says:

There is a lot of other ways to control a dog without the barbaric shock collar it just means you have to devote more time to training your dog

  4. Last chance! Says:

Sorry,Charlie…GOOD e-collar are EXPENSIVE!! Way more than $200!!!!!
    Try a LONG-LINE *&* TRAINING the ill-mannered maniac!
& keep it HOME until you DO!

  5. Owned by an Akita Says:

Would it have a remote control or something? I don’t get it.

Anyways, shock collars are the lazy way to "train" dogs. What you should be doing is teaching your dog how to act appropriately in public, and you should never let your dog off lead in a situation like that. If your dog was playing nice with a child who happened to startle him and he felt the need to bite, you and your dog would be screwed. You may have a good dog,but in the right situation something could go wrong.

Find a dog park if you want your dog to be able to run around off lead.

DON’T get a shock collar. A good leader will not train there dogs and treat them with pain. Even if it is a small pain. A good leader will teach there dog correctly. Go to obedience school and stay away form the shock collars. They will not teach your dog anything.

  7. BunnuvaSitch Says:

You’re better off to spend your time and effort in a good training course rather than using a shock collar. Personally, if it were me, I’d MUCH prefer to spend "quality time" with my human getting to learn fun things, rather than my human zapping the hell out of me every time I got excited about something.

  8. Baa_Baa_Blacksheep Says:

personally I’d get one and put it on and use the lowest setting (if it will let you). If it hurts you it will hurt your dog. Remember the point of shock collars is NOT to cause pain but to get their attention.

The first one is water proof so I’d probably go with that one.

Again basic obedience will help with the bolting but I understand you may have a very active sporty dog…which may ignore or forget these commands.

I know it seems like getting a shock collar is the easiest way to control your dog, but it’s scaring for dogs. There have been cases of dogs that don’t like to go outside because of them. A better idea would be buying a whistle, and do a little training session of blowing the whistle, rewarding with a treat and repeating. Then if you see her going after the little kids, simply blow the whistle. You can practice in your backyard, and if it doesn’t work take her to obedience school where they will teach her to "come".
    good luck

Nothing fits those standards, sorry. A really nice Ecollar is over 200.

Try just doing basic obedience with her, or a prong.

And to all of the bunny huggers… Ecollars and prongs and chokes used PROPERLY are really good training tools.

I also am going to agree with the people against shock collars, because you must first understand a dog. a dog who is approaching say a kid and you give it a shock, will only tell the dog that a kid causes him harm and he will stay away but at the same time he will learn not to trust children and may even dislike them and could cause him to hate children and bite them. The best thing to do is get a prong collar get neighborhood kids to help, let them come near when you see he makes a jump give a quick jerk and release with a firm no. let the kids come close again if he tries again give another correction, believe me it will not take long for him to learn that jumping is not acceptable. when he stops jumping which should be at about the 4th or 5th correction if done correctly and timed just right, than you tell the children to come around make him sit and now they can offer treats or praise. the dog will soon learn that sitting for children will get him a reward, instead of a correction for jumping.

  12. Memphis Belle Says:

Jumping up on children could injure or frighten a young child, so keep the dog on a long lead until he is very clear in his head that you demand that he obeys commands & will follow through with an immediate pop release collar correction if he chooses to ignore you.

You could effectively obedience train your dog with a prong collar, with the level of correction suited the individual temperament of your dog, to ensure he knows that there will be a negative consequence if he doesn’t do what is expected of him.

I agree that an e-collars used by a capable trainer to proof a dog to ensure a dog obeys a command regardless of environmental distractions, but it is worth investing in a Dogtra or Tri-tronics collar.

  13. Curtis M Says:

Petsafe is garbage, and so is that model of Innotek you’re looking at.

As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. Those 2 collars require expensive replacement batteries and give uneven levels of stimulation. A higher quality, more expensive collar, will have rechargeable batteries that last for 3 years and are user replaceable aka they will last a life time, literally.

Get a dogtra 280ncp and nothing less.

  14. Single Worker 1230 Says:

If I had to choose between the two, I would get the Innotek as it’s overall a better collar and the company will stand behind their product. Although the PetsMart model is a crappy model and won’t hold up worth a crap. I don’t like PetSafe, as all of them are crap and unreliable. However the best collars on the market are put out by tri-tronics and dogtra. Since you want a cheap collar, these won’t help you much. You can google for their websites. I know this because I use remote trainers or e-collars in my own training.

E-collars are not magic wands. In fact they can be quite cruel when not used properly. Many dogs have been ruined by the overzealous use of an e-collar.

The e-collar will improve your recall, sit-stay, or what ever command that you want, if used properly. It will not teach or train your dog to do those commands. The trainer must teach the dog what the words mean.

You are better off taking a class from someone who has some e-collar knowledge before putting the collar on your dog and hitting the button.

Gotta love PetsMart for selling e-collars. Especially when their own trainers will not allow their students to use adversives in their classes. Talk about a double standard. Everytime I’ve taken my dog into PetsMart wearing an e-collar or pinch collar, the trainer tells me what a mean person that I am. Next time, I’ll take her over and show her what is for sale on their own shelves.

Here are some websites on how to properly introduce your dog to the e-collar.

Sounds to me like you have quite a bit of training to do before you take that dog out without a leash.
An E collar is not the remote control to your TV, and it will not magically make your dog obey you.

The poster who pointed out that shocking a dog who is approaching a child causes aggression to children, has made a very good point. This is why these training tools should only be used under the tutelage of a good trainer.

If you have limited funds, take them and invest in a good obedience class. Anyone who has not been able to train a dog not to jump up is not ready to use one of these tools without supervision.

And by the way, at my PetSmart, we tell people who want to purchase an E collar that they should first find a good trainer who will teach them how to use it correctly and effectively. Just because we don’t use them in our classes, doesn’t mean we discriminate.
You should spend some time listening to the horrific things people want to use these things for and then maybe you will understand our reluctance to sell them to people who have no clue.
